Anorexia is a serious eating disorder that, in those affected, causes:
- excessive weight loss;
- a strong fear of gaining weight;
- a distorted view of one's own body image.
The anorexic person is in fact very thin, constantly monitors their body weight, avoids eating and sees themselves as more "fat" than they really are.
Anorexia nervosa upsets a person's life, since the thought tied to body weight interferes with any other daily activity, from school or work to interpersonal relationships.
The treatment of anorexia nervosa is complex and requires the cooperation of specialists, such as dietitians, doctors expert in eating disorders, psychiatrists and psychologists.
A person with anorexia nervosa needs not only a tailored dietary plan, but also adequate psychological support (psychotherapy).
In other words, the goal of therapy is to treat the body (the physical symptoms) and, at the same time, also treat the mind (the behavioral symptoms).
It is important to act quickly and when the illness is in its early stages, before complications develop.
